December is a time when the holiday spirit surrounds us with the sights of decorations, the smells of Christmas trees, and the sounds or carols. At the schools we serve, December was a time to showcase student learning from the first half of the school year through winter concerts.
Our two partner schools and the seven schools in our Dominican Schools Music Project consulting project held winter concerts between December 10th and 17th. The week featured music from around the globe ranging from a traditional Israeli round to Dutch singing to holiday songs from here in the USA.
"This year's Christmas Program, ‘A Christmas Carol: Scrooge in Bethlehem', has been especially exciting for the kids at [St. Mary of the Angels] because of the recently released animated Scrooge movie with Jim Carey," said teaching artist Ali Miller leading up to the concert at her school. "There are multiple songs with popular Christmas melodies adapted to fit the story. The kids are really enjoying the new and clever lyrics. Of course, I have inserted a few extra chime, recorder, and Orff pieces to spice things up!"
Concert performances develop student focus, confidence in public presentation, and allow our students to share and celebrate their developing music skill with their families and members of the community. If you would like to attend a spring performance in May, please email us at info@etmbayarea.org.
