March 25, 2010- ETM-Bay Area staff, supporters, guests, students, parents, and friends celebrated our work restoring music education to the curriculum of schools serving at-risk populations at our first annual benefit at the historic Women's Building in San Francisco's Mission District. The event highlighted the successes of our programs, and provided guests with a chance to experience the joy of listening to students from our partner schools and our consulting project, the Dominican Schools Music Project (DSMP), perform.
Students from four schools participated with instrumental and vocal performances, at an event that also featured a terrific silent auction, food and drinks, and musical entertainment. Performances included St. Edward's Advanced String Ensemble, St. Elizabeth's Advanced Band, St. James' After School Percussion Class and A Cappella Choir, and vocal performances by students from Coronado Elementary.
"The benefit performances were a wonderful demonstration of the musical skills we teach, and allowed our guests to witness the joy our programs bring into the lives of students," related Board Chair Irene Scully. "To see students smiling and performing with confidence showcased what the ETM model for music education achieves. We give students the tools and confidence necessary to achieve academically and in life."
The benefit successfully raised over $4,000 to support ETM-Bay Area's programs. Though attendees witnessed only a fraction of what the ETM model for music education accomplishes, Executive Director Keri Lindell urged guests to learn about the program, inviting them to visit our partner schools and increase their involvement with ETM-Bay Area.
"The measure of success of this event extends beyond the money raised here tonight," praised Ms. Lindell. "The true success is in watching our students perform with pride and poise, exciting new people with our work, and inspiring them to become involved. I'm very proud of the ways in which our staff, Board, teachers, and students have dedicated themselves to our program and helped to further our mission."
We would like to thank everyone that attended, and our staff, board, and volunteers for making the event a success. Our programs would not be possible without the generous support of those passionate about providing students with music as a part of their education as a method to benefit the whole child. Please visit our website (link to "How to Help" section) to learn more about how you can help ETM-Bay Area provide at-risk students in the Bay Area with the joy and benefits gained from having an education that includes music as part of the curriculum.
