DSMP Students Deliver Pitch Perfect Performance

April 12, 2010- Students from St. James Elementary School sang the National Anthem along with other selected San Francisco schools at the San Francisco Giants baseball game to a crowd of 26,011.

"Having these experiences as young children is such a memorable life event - even for their teacher! This has been one of my lifelong dreams- and our kids sang with beautiful sweet voices," expressed St. James music teacher Jennifer McKenna. "The experience of singing with a much larger group gives them a whole different sense of the power and strength of choral music- and I made the jumbotron on top of it!"

The students shared McKenna's enthusiasm about the event. An excited St. James 4th grade choir member exclaimed, "It was awesome to sing at the game! The mascot came by and gave us high fives. We felt proud to say hi to our parents on the cameras!"

We utilize performance opportunities for our students as a way to showcase the learning in their music classes. Performing for others develops self-esteem and builds confidence. Congratulations to DSMP teacher Jennifer McKenna and the singers of the St. James Choir on your stellar performance!

St. James' choir looks forward to another special performance opportunity on May 3rd when they will have a chance to perform with a collection of San Francisco schools in a choral festival at Davis Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

Quotes

  • "Music provides academic, social and creative avenues in which our children can learn, live and express who they are.  For some children, music is the way and means by which they communicate the best.  It’s a great program.  I wish there were more classes and instruments available!"
