Around the World in Orff Workshop

Saturday, January 16, 2010, ETM-Bay Area program staff members joined Orff master teacher Doug Goodkin and dedicated music instructors from around the Bay Area for a daylong workshop at the San Francisco School. The workshop highlighted musical traditions from around the world, including Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Bali, and Thailand, looking at the xylophone in world music culture and the ways in which material can be played by children on Orff instruments. Selected songs, dances, and games were a part of the fun!

"The opportunity to connect our instructors with teachers of Doug Goodkin's caliber and to learn strategies for bringing more of the world's cultural diversity into the lives of the students we serve is invaluable," remarked Executive Director Keri Lindell. "This workshop provided a richness of materials, activities and strategies that were practical and easily adaptable to a variety of teaching situations."

Teaching artists from both of our partner schools attended the workshop, which provided our instructors with an opportunity to learn new, exciting teaching methods that they can use in the classroom. We look forward to our teaching artists utilizing what they learned from Goodkin to benefit the students we serve.
